Powerstroke torgue converter surge

In some cases, you may need to have your transmission rebuilt. This is the cost to flush out your transmission and refill it with new transmission fluid. Yes, changing transmission fluid or performing a transmission flush will help fix most torque converter shudder problems. However, If you let your torque converter shudder for too long you might have to rebuild or replace it. Prevention and even adjustment are frequently as straightforward as getting your transmission serviced regularly.

Most transmissions have a removable filter and pan. On these types of vehicles, we will drain the transmission fluid and remove the pan for proper service. The will allow the technician to perform an inspection for wear and broken parts. At this step in the process, small problems can easily be fixed to prevent major breakdowns. While the transmission pan is off, the technician will tighten the bolts on the trans valve body to the specified amount of torque.

Over time, the valve body gasket will shrink from heat and the bolts will start to loosen. The loose valve body can develop cross-leaks in passages. This will cause your transmission to fail. Tightening these bolts properly will prevent this problem. After inspecting the valve body bolts, the transmission filter and seal can be replaced. Replacing the filter is very important on transmissions that are built with replaceable filters. Restricted or blocked transmission filters will cause low internal pressure and can damage your transmission quickly.

First, the tech drives the car and then drains the fluid. The new fluid will be added and then the tech will drive the car again to remove any debris. The last step is to drain the fluid and then refill it again. Transmission service is very from a transmission flush. With a flush, the tech circulates the new transmission fluid through part of the transmission.

The techs do not inspect internal components, tighten valve body bolts, or replace the transmission filter. Continuing to drive with the shudder could cause your transmission to fail. When this happens, the transmission will have to be rebuilt, repaired or replaced. Proper servicing regularly is the best prevention. I had the manager look up the paper work for that customer, to give him a call and see how that truck is doing. With the truck I was now facing with the same problem, I figured I would eliminate these connectors just to see what would happen.

If you compare the snapshot shown in figure 6 after the repair, versus before the repair as shown in figure 1, you can see that the TPS voltage is a lot smoother and the TCC problem is gone. There is one spike on the TCC when it goes into 4 th gear, but that is normal and how it is designed to work.

Since the first truck that was repaired in this fashion, I have performed this repair on more than 20 trucks and in each case, never seen a comeback. Hey Mike, I was wondering if you could help figure out my lockup issue on a 98 12v, as i see this is great article but only covered 24v engine with different harness. When I lost my alternator and crank sensor at same time dumb luck My transmission was defaulted to 3rd gear while on the job towing a camper out to Wyoming and I had 0 issues with transmission staying locked—it was actually a good haul not having torque converter lock and unlock constantly in 3rd gear and ran 60 mph in 3rd gear with 0 issues after fighting it the previous miles barely touchin throttle to keep it from unlocking when it was locked in 3rd.

I Have Re-routed Ground wire away from alternator was resting on the alternator before and was source of my overdrive lockup issue, now I just have 3rd gear lockup issue, and have 0 issues with regular driving or towing in overdrive, just when I have to down shift or maintain a speed in 3rd gear I have problems. Thanks, Lenny. Mike, I had one a year ago that I had to do the same thing to the battery cable ends to get it fixed even though they were good.

It IS much better after the filter.

Toque converter jumping in and out of lock up, In third gear around mph. Goes away after 60 mph. Changed both speed sensors , and the throttle position sensor. Also added that noise filter with The diode In it. I pulled the alternator fuse , no change.

Thanks Joe. I posted above already. No rhyme or reason as to when this will occur. As far as speed goes, generally after 45mph but, no particular speed window. It will still randomly do it up to 70 mph as well! Hey lee did you try to pull the fuse for the alternator.
